I seem to recall somebody asking about adding a BFO to a non-equipped radio, some time back.  TenTec still offers a kit for $11.00 - it's the model 1050, is very easy to build and works pretty doggone good.  It's varactor tunable with the "shafted" pot.  (I put one in an S-38D, using the original switch, and it worked like a champ.  Order from www.tentec.com
