Perhaps a good alternative to steel wool is ScotchBrite pads. Just go easy as they can
abrade almost as well as steel wool.
I've never tried to restore a chassis to like new condition but I suspect the only way to really
do it is to replate it. That means a total strip down. A major job to say the least. It would be
easier to simply polish the chassis. Wouldn't be original but it would fit in with your kitchen
appliances - haha.
