I've never encountered an HF general coverage receiver in which the alignment was done with the bandspread cap fully meshed (max capacitance). Do the alignment with the cap fully open and the bandspread dial reading at the highest frequency on its scales.
It sounds as if Tim-the-Tool-Man might have been in that radio (lord save us), and in his INFINITE wisdom, put the bandspread dial on wrong...? Been there, seen that....
Or, watch out for bandspread dial cords which, when Tim-the-Tool-Man restrung them, got wrapped around the tuning spindle the wrong way (clockwise vs counterclockwise)... the result is that the dial and the cap move in opposite directions. As the cap closes, the dial reads HIGHER... Bizarre.
Lots of interesting reasons why radios wind up in eVilBay, hmm?
