I'd bet that a lot of those antennas that "ought not to have worked" (such
as dipoles fed on even harmonics for example) were sufficiently different
from the ideal antennas that their imperfect symmetry, and unbalanced
feeds, and so on, allowed them to be usable. That is, they worked in
reality when theory seemed to say they shouldn't because the real antennas
(despite appearance) *really weren't* the same as the theoretical ones.
