Both the SX-17 and SX-28 (also the SX-16 ,24 and 25)share the same
S-meter.Anybody who disagrees with this statement needs to open up an ORIGINAL SX-17
S-meter and compare with an ORIGINAL SX-28 S-meter .Internally they are the
same with the exception of the dial scale.
It is interesting that in a previous post somebody wrote that "The only
meters that appear similar are the SX-16, SX-24, SX-25, S-27 and
S-32. Ive probably missed a few variations of those. The SX-28 is different
as it has a "normal" left hand zero rest"
They probably don't know that an SX-32 is the same rcvr as the SX-28 BUT
with LESS features(ANL circuitry etc) .However both the 28 and 32 have the
same type of s-meter.
As far as the variations, I've noted at least two.The first one is the early
version based on the SX-16 ,ANL control is NOT marked as "ANL" on the front
panel, band shaft doesn't extend to the rear apron, the circuitry is exactly
like an SX-16,the Noise limiter tube is an 6J5 triode connected as diode
,knobs have pointers .I've used the SX-16 schematic to work on this
type(components values exactly match).
The later run has no pointers on knobs,ANL control is marked as "ANL" on
the front panel,6H6 used as Noise Limiter..There are significant electrical
differences .The commonly avaliable SX-17 manual covers this model.
Then there is also the SX-17F which is the FCC version.
