I think it would work, but that diode is likely a germanium one, not
silicon as the 1N4007. But it won't harm anything. The meter may not
read just right, especially at low or very low deflections (where it
is not so important, after all.)

The carrier is not being nulled. You may have to overhaul that
section of the transmitter. Have you tried adjusting the null
pot(s)? (I dont' remember the details of this transmitter, though I
do own one, it's been buried in storage for a long time... soon to be
unearthed.) Unfortunately, this may be a tough job if there are leaky
caps in there and the section is in one of those added-on chassis on
top of the main chassis.. very hard to get out for working on.
IF you do take one of those chassis off, do yourself a favor and
replace ALL silver mica caps and most or all resistors.
