I totally agree both with both Dennis D. W7QHO and Jim W5JO .Aligned rcvrs  
like SX28,SX42 etc without using any "intricate combinations of L,C and R" with 
 excellent results! I never  follow the instruction manuals to the letter  
either ,most of the time the alignment instructions are "confusing".All one  
really needs a GOOD UNDERSTANDING of how a superheterodyne rcvr works.I always  
make  it a point to do an indepth study of the circuitry of the rcvr I'm  
aligning which makes the alignment job much easier.
Nor do I use any "megabuck" " test equipment  for alignment purpose  .
Of course I'm going to receive some"flak" now from the "experts" for  making 
these statements.
