[Hallicrafters] Line voltage and other sundry topics

Regarding line voltage...
My line voltage usually runs around 115-120 volts here
in northern Los Angeles County. Depends on the time
of day, etc. Might go up a bit maybe if the power
company ever cleans the insulators on the power poles
(and then I could hear something on 75 meters...)
Fortunately, my SX-17 is a Canadian model with that
big, massive multi-voltage transformer (110, 130, 150,
210, 230, 250 volts 25-60 Hz) so if I was really
concerned about line voltage, I could set it on 130.
Regarding seeing tubes glow...
I kinda enjoy it. I also enjoying saving a little
energy wherever I can (and still enjoying my
boatanchors) so I don't have a problem with solid
state rectifiers. Also saves heat, lowers drift and
helps components last longer. I've never noticed any
problem with tubes not lasting as long.
Regarding seeing this discussion over and over
again...
New people always show up, some don't have access to
archives or know how to get access to archives. Or
have the time and/or inclination to dig through a
bunch of archives to answer a specific question. Some
may not know just how to search, since maybe the
question they had was answered using different
terminology than they were used to.
Regarding the price of copper...
In the wind power industry (and probably elsewhere as
well) I have seen a shift toward aluminum cables
instead of copper cables...I've also seen transformers
wound with aluminum rather than copper. Wonder how
long before aluminum wire becomes the standard?
