Douglas,
I have done something like that for years in various
receivers. I have an S-20R that I bought in 1970, for
example. I replaced the 80 with a couple 1 amp 1KV
piv diodes. It has worked fine ever since (well, it
has sat for awhile, and the filter caps are going, but
that is more due to old age than anything else). The
advantages are that it runs a LOT cooler, saves the
electricity consumed by the filament in the '80, and
is a lot cheaper than the solid-state replacement
rectifiers you can buy. I've heard that there can be
problems with having the B+ on full right away, but
I've done this to probably 7 or 8 receivers over the
past nearly 40 years and have never had any problem.
As for the 6V6s, don't know if you need to worry about
"matched" tubes...I always thought that was for the
people who think they can hear the difference (maybe
they can, but I can't) between different types of
speaker cable. Check on eBay, or some of the other
sources. I think this particular tube is still being
made in China.
