Hi,

This is a bit long...

Just finished a recapping and a general cleaning on an
SX-42. It was a bit easier to work on than the SX-62 I
did a few weeks back. Didn't seem a scary as it's been
made out be, but them again I didn't have to pull out
burnt wafers!

Cleaned all the wafers & switches with De-Oxit. I had
it up on its side with the lights out and didn't see
any arcing across any of the wafers when switched back
and forth. With the tuning gears re-greased it now
glides right along silky smooth.

I believe it's a 5th run model, SR. # HA-80018. It
seems that it has all the mods listed in the "Service
Hints." The serial number plate lists Edwin H.
Armstrong as one of the patent holders, no doubt for
the FM circuit, until RCA took it away from him.

This was the receiver that has the Knight Crystal
Calibrator installed, which is working quite well with
both the 100 mc & 1000 mc crystals. The problem was
that the antenna wire was not attached.

The unit had only one head scratcher for me, It was
loosing reception on half of the 4th band. After
asking a friend of mine with considerably more
experience, he said it was probably the
mixer/oscillator 7F8 loctal tube. I switched it out
and it fixed the problem.

The "Bass" selection on Tone seems a little weak, but
I'll look into that later.

I've had it on for about 8 hours and it barely drifts.
SSB comes in relatively well too. Not a bad little
radio. Looks neat too with that soft green lighting.

Douglas
