It's actually the best way and the way Tektronix cleaned scopes coming in for
service according to a retired Tektronix technician. Disassemble as much as
is possible or practical and tape over places you don't want to get wet such as
inside IF transformers. Secure a plastic bag around the power transformer
with a rubber band and go at it with scrub brushes and your favorite cleaning
agent. The best stuff I have found is a 50-50 mix of industrial strength 409 (not
the weaker kitchen variety) and ammonia in a plastic sprayer bottle. I try to
schedule jobs like this for good hot sunny afternoons and usually out in the
backyard on an old card table. Have a shop vac with a discharge nozzle and
hose on the blowing side handy to blow dry afterwards and allow to bake in the
sun for several hours afterwards to finish the job. If you have any chassis
polishing in mind you could do that before washing. Makes the job much nicer to
work on afterwards and I have never experienced any adverse effects from this
procedure.

Have fun!
Greg
