[Hallicrafters] SSB with SX-117

Hi Anders,

When you say it sounds like a thief alarm was the receiver oscillating?
It should be able to run at full RF gain without this happening.
Hopefully this is something simple so first check to make sure that all
of the tube shields are properly seated. I guess it might be possible to
have it oscillate if the factory gain set control (R-19) is set too high
though I have never tried this "experiment".

It is also possible that your AGC is not working properly. If the BFO
appears to be working then tune in an SSB signal and increase the AF
gain to near maximum and reduce the RF gain to reduce the volume and see
if you can now understand the voices. If so then there is a problem in
the AGC circuit.

Do you have another receiver that will tune down to 50 kilohertz where
you can listen to see if the SX-117 BFO is working? Or you might try to
listen to its 3'rd harmonic on around 150 kilohertz if you have a
longwave receiver that covers that range, just connect a small antenna
from the receiver to near the BFO/product detector tube (V11 6BE6). If
you have an oscilloscope you could use this of course! If you determine
that the BFO is working it may be off frequency and you can reset it as
per page 19 of the manual.

I hope this helps!

Best wishes,
