[Hallicrafters] SSB with SX-117

I have just bought my first Hallicrafter; the beautiful SX-117 receiver. It 
work great in AM mode, but I have not managed to make it work properly in 
SSB. First it just sounded like a thief alarm, but that was easily fixed by 
adjusting the RF gain. The problem is, that it is possible to hear “voices” 
- but they sound like when you try to listen to SSB in AM mode! It does not 
help to change the setting to USB/LSB. What is wrong? Am I doing something 
wrong (I have only experimented for a couple of hours so I still have a lot 
to learn!)?

I also wonder if there is someone out there how knows were I can buy 
crystals to change the receivers frequency range?
