The bandspread, at least on the S-40 (never had an
S-40A, but I think it is the same) and the S-20R (the
pre-war version) is set up so that 0 is the point
where the bandspread capacitor (excuse me, condenser)
is at minimum capacity. As the numbers increase, the
capacity increases, and you tune below the set
frequency. The bandspread should be set for minimum
capacity for proper tracking. I believe there is some
instruction on the bandspread dial indicating where it
should be set. If the dial is not at that point when
the capacitor is at minimum capacity (all the fins
unmeshed) then check the adjustment of the dial.
