Jim,
One wonders if it is obvious to the average Ham that the meter for $50 is
"NOT" an original? Depending on whether it is like a white spot on a black
cat's fur or a subtle shade of gray - It is my personal observation based
on experience that a purist restoration seldom yields what the restoration
costs! Naturally the make/model do affect said sell value.
I remember when I was designing engines for high power street machines and
building custom cars for competition in the ISCA, one writer wrote:
Is the value of the Model A Ford affected by the correct positioning of the
letter "F" on the word Ford on the metal hubcap?
Technically the letter "F" must point at the valve stem. However, since
almost nobody knows this, other then the most pure of the purists, the value
is not affected.
The question becomes: At what point do replacement parts lower the value of
a TX or RX or transceiver?
I learned quickly that with a car, the exterior paint job made the
difference in price and as to what sold! As long as it "looked pretty"
buyers seemed unconcerned about the engine, transmission, drive train,
brakes, shocks or the interior. I think this same perception also applies to
vintage gear. Personally, and this has nothing to do with me being totally
blind now, a gorgeous radio is of no use when it does not work!
