Bob,
I have to agree with Ed R. on his commentary. Typically, when I'm aligning
something, I set the volume level so that my AC voltmeter (across the
speaker) is about half-scale with reasonable signal level. It's just easier
to see the peaking that way.
On the slugs, I have had some success - some - by removing the IF can,
taking the assembly out - actually cracking the old slugs, and after removal
of the pieces, screwing in new slugs that have not been buggered up. If
your old ones are really, really stuck, and are in the area of the windings,
you may just be stuck with NOT realigning the slugs, rather some other
theatrical way of tuning. (know any dentists? Their tiny vibratory drills
could make short work of stuck slugs).
