DON'T DO IT!
The paper caps are almost certainly all, repeat ALL, leaky or shorted.
The B+ filter caps are almost certainly DE-formed and will likely overload
your power transformer and rectifier tube when the rectifier gets to
conducting.
Re-form ALL electrolytics before applying normal power. You will be better
off by replacing them all, repeat all.
Replace ALL paper caps to avoid burned out dropping resistors and IF can coils.
If you insist on "bringing it up slowly on a variac" then you need to know
that you can get your power transformer rewound at a cost of about $150 or so.
