[Hallicrafters] Powder coating experiences

Lloyd KK7IZ kk7iz at cox.net

have a 9 cubic foot powder coating in the shop. 3' wide with double doors,
2' high and 1.5' deep. Will go to 750 degrees, however most powder coating
is done between 380 and 420 degrees.
When doing aluminum, I clean, bead blast if possible and treat with
Alumaprep and alodine. Steel is cleaned similar, but etched with a Jasco
phosphoric acid solution. Have never had any trouble with adhesion. Have
done a bunch of aircraft parts, some car parts and a little bit of
electronics.
One thing, powder coat isn't as tough as you think it is. Jasco Industrial
paint stripper ($30 gallon at Home Depot) will roll the best of it right
off.
Do I do work for other people? If they are willing to pay for the time it
takes to clean the stuff up, yes. The material and bake in is the lesser
part of the job. I have had people bring me stuff that they said was cleaned
and I still clean it, as even a finger print after clean up can cause
problems.
Cost of doing a Halli cabinet, say for a SX-101-------- $75-100 depending on
condition, plus shipping. The shipping is the killer. Probably cheaper to
have it done at home.
I have wrinkle in black and gray, most any other common color in both gloss
and matt.
This is a simple but still exacting science, not for the sloppy or hurried.

"Cut the red wire" (snip) <turns page> "after you cut the white wire" (scene
from one of my favorite MASH episodes)
Thanx
