David,
I got six HT-32B size Hallicrafter's cabinets done all at the same time
by a commercial powder coating firm near me for less than $200 for the
lot, including a preliminary hot sand strip of the original finish.
This was because they happened to be spraying black and silver paints
that were close enough to the original for my taste. The job was
excellent and I'm quite happy. While there are those that are willing
to try and do this at home, curing the sprayed powder in their kitchen
oven, I'd rather spend my time on the electronics portion of boatanchor
restoration.
Price and quality can vary all over the place. It's best to go out a
look at some of the work that an operator has done prior to selecting
one. In general, powder coated finish is more uniform and more durable
than conventional spray paint IMHO. I've seen the advertisements for
textures as well - haven't tried them yet.
One caution: The commercial operator I used was used to high volume work
for local manufacturers of heavy steel structures. When I went to pick
up my radio cabinets, they had been carefully stacked on a wooden
freight pallet with layers of foam in between and around the outside,
and then wrapped to the pallet with clear industrial shrink wrap. The
tension in the shrink wrap warped the cabinets slightly, but I was able
to straighten them without marring the finish.
