I'm with Charlie.
For me, one of the main attractions is buying an old Halli "in need of
TLC" and bringing it up to cosmetic
and operational scratch. I'm not really interested in paying lots of $$
for a pristine specimen someone else
has restored or kept in mothballs.
Also I think there is far too much Ebay-bashing goes on in this list. If
it hadn't been for Ebay I would never
have got started with this hobby. I have never been to a hamfest
(although they sound fun) and had never
touched a Hallicrafters radio before I bought a tired SX-110 on Ebay.
My most expensive purchase was an SX-28 from an old ham. This was a
private sale, and not on Ebay. I
thought it was interesting that this old geezer charged me above Ebay
market price for his set, and when
I got it I found that instead of it being all original it had a major
mod, that deleted the ANL! As such it would
have gone on Ebay for half what I paid, if that.
So I guess I have the opposite experience to others when it comes to Ebay.
