Whether we are willing to admit it or not most of us are concerned about the
investment side of the radio hobby aren't we? I have always thought of
myself as being more interested in the history aspect of the hobby and in
acquiring skill for faithful to the original type restoration work but I also know
the last time I sold something I did not give it away either. I would have to
say eBay has taken away a lot of fun from the hobby for me. Around ten years
ago before eBay exploded on the scene it was for the thrill of the chase and
the sense of accomplishment in meeting a challenge in finding something
thought to be scarce and satisfying feeling afterwards for owning a sought after
desirable item. I remember looking at old receivers on hamfest tailgates with a
flashlight just before the crack of dawn and thinking "by golly I think I
can save this one!" Now we just sit in our easy chair and scroll past an
endless parade from a seemingly abundant supply of antique radio items once thought
to be nearly nonexistent. If you don't see that SX-23 in the condition you
want today (yawn) just check back tomorrow. The radio hobby has also shifted a
little, now in addition to knowing how to replace all the capacitors we have
to be fairly proficient paint and body men to repair shipping damage that
results from having our PayPal purchases shipped to our door.
