You may be right about the original design working as
intended, but the other side of the coin is that this
stuff was built to meet a price.  The only 50s-vintage
gear that really took a lot of care with shielding was
that made by EF Johnson and Collins; the rest was
generally not much more than adequate.  You can build
something better.
