Chris responds:

For starters, if you built an exact replica, it would likely work as
intended first time out...
Second, them old engineers who designed this little critter probably figured
out where to place parts and wiring and shields (if used) to avoid some of
the problems you mentioned to watch out for further down in your message.
Third, before I modify anything, if it's possible, I really like to see the
original design, layout and packaging.

Lastly, thanks for the helpful tips.
