Julian and Joe Bob,
I frequented "Burger Continental" back in the 70's when I worked at Ralph Parsons in Pasadena. Lake and California sounds right for the location. The belly dancing, great burgers, and good beer were an unbeatable combination. The dancers were really talented, too! Lots of Cal Tech types loved it for the same reasons. I like to think some of them were inspired to think about some esoteric science in places like that.
Hope it's still the same place. I remember it had an outdoor courtyard in the back - really pleasant.
BTW - we installed a ham station at the top of the Parsons building a few blocks away. One of the more enthusiastic ham club members actaully hauled a BTI kW amplifier (3-1000Z) to the roof room. That was NOT easy. We worked a lot of DX from up there.
I just wish I had had the bucks to buy one of those Pasadena Craftsman houses back then, when they were relatively cheap.
The "subtle gold metalflake" is a pretty good suggestion for the Hallicrafters paint. But Julian - hunter green?? Are you going for the vintage Jaguar look? That might work out better on a vintage Eddystone.
Metalflake blue might work better with the black accents on the Hallicrafters. As for the extra holes in the cabinet, why not drill more of them (big ones) and go for the "Googly" architectural look? Raymond Loewy would have been tempted by that, I think. Like the struts with the big holes on the 50's spaceships. Saves weight, too!
Julian, please post pictures when you are finished with that thing.

Rocco N6KN
