The "self destruct" feature was always a switch, with a bright red cover  
that had the word DESTRUCT written on it. It wasrarely button. That would be too  
tempting. I bought a piece of surplus gear in Los Angeles in the early 50's, 
and  one Thermite charge was still in it. What a fiasco that was. And looking 
at that  hole, it looks like about 7/16" which would be about right for a 
switch.
