Thanks Jim,
I spent an afternoon measuring, calculating, and checking things
and kept coming to the same conclusion. I just couldn't believe
they designed the radio that way, so I kept thinking I was missing
something.
The method you suggest seems to be the only "easy" way to get
the transmit and receive on the same frequency. The calibrator
signal could be used for zero beating and RIT adjustment.
