[Hallicrafters] Shipping equipment

I was out of town when this thread started, but I can not resist.
Several days ago a guy listed extolling the virtues of the USPS (a USPS
employee not doubt). Well, I purchased a Racal RA6790?GM on ebay from a
guy in New Mexico. He shipped by USPS insured. When I went to pick up
the radio, the local Postmaster sheepishly brought out a box that had
been ravaged. The packing peanuts had fallen out through several large
holes in the box, and all four sides had been crushed. I refused
delivery and called the shipper and told him what happened. He asked
that I go back and accept the delivery and open the box. He hoped the
radio had survived, but if I was not happy, I could return it to him at
his cost. I went back and retrieved the box. When I got home, I
carefully opened the tattered box and looked at the radio. Although it
had been wrapped in four layers of bubble wrap, most of the bubbles had
been popped. Upon further inspection, the front panel of the radio was
bent in a vertical V formation. Now realize, the front panel of the
6790 is a quarter inch thick steel plate. Both the top and bottom were
buckled. It looked as if the thing had been hit by a forklift. I
returned the radio to the post office. They gave me instruction as to
how to help the shipper process the insurance claim. We both delivered
what was requested, and heard nothing for four months. I went by the
post office and asked why things were taking so long. They could not
fine the paperwork, and we had to start over. Now, after seven months I
get a letter saying that after an investigation, they find no evidence
that the radio was damaged while in their custody. I now have to go
back to my Postmaster and refresh her recollection of her bring the box
out to begin with. Your postal service at work! I will never ship with
them again, and to the extent I can avoid them in my business, I will
not use the mails. And these people want to bring us socialized
medicine. Good luck.

I know everybody has their favorite shipper, but I've had good luck with
UPS and their "foam pillow" concept. The "Customer Svc. Centers" (not
the UPS stores), have cartons for sale, as well as catalytic-activated
foam packs "Pillows", that make custom packing for oddball shapes (like
SX-62, SX-71, S-20, etc.) a slam-dunk. The pricing for the packs is
listed here (prices may vary according to location). The good part, is
that you end up with a custom-fitted shipping container for the NEXT
one.

For future reference (it took me a week and a lot of frustration,
dealing with idiots, to get this info)

Large Box (fits SX-62, SX-71, S22, etc.) $8.00

Foam (Catalytic) Packs:

Small 3.00
Medium 4.00
Large 4.50
X-Large 5.00

The S20R I just shipped took two large and a couple of small packs.
Hope this helps
