Jack, I'll give you my impressions -
I like the receiver a lot. It's sensitive and selective and has really
nice audio for having a conventional single-ended audio stage. I got it
from a buddy who said he hadn't touched it, and I haven't either, in
contrast to every SP-600 version I've owned which all required extensive
re-capping. They're both great receivers, especially for AM and SWL,
and better as a "band cruiser" than what you'll want for a long contest
weekend (not that most of us work contests, at least running boatanchors!)
I've got both the SX-73 and my recapped SP-600 mounted together in a
rack and the performance is very comparable between the two. Both are
excellent, but I give the edge to the SP-600 on looks and to the SX-73
on performance - mainly because I like the audio and dial drive better.
I've always found it fascinating to see how these two dominant
receiver manufacturers approached the R-274 design.
73, Bob W9RAN
