Nicely said, Duane. Why, just this morning, I was listening to the
weekend-morning Colorado75m AM net on a 1959 Heathkit AR-3! I "rotate"
receivers out in my shop from time-to-time, and although the HBR-11 & SX-62A
hear MUCH BETTER, I decided to listen to the venerable "receiver" that began
it all. The selectivity [sic] reminds you of how far we've come in RX
design, as without the Q multiplier, it's pretty darned wide. Still - that
receiver, using the furnace ductwork of our house for an antenna, (which
worked GREAT, by the way) opened up huge new vistas of adventure,

Speaking of space adventures; if you've ever been to the Smithsonian Air &
Space in WASHDC, take a GOOD look inside the Freedom and Gemini capsules -
lots of old fashioned toggle switches. They knew WHAT WORKED! The
"crudeness" of the spacecraft it'self is quite an awakening, compared to
todays'.

Of who did it first? There is NO DOUBT among researchers, the Nikola Tesla
was the FIRST to have a practical receiver, and listen to it! Hertz only
proved a principle, Marconi was better in marketing, but Tesla involved the
oscillator (as we know it), and noted the reception of static crashes from
hundreds of miles away (leading to his propagation theorums), long before
others did it - Yeah, Marconi included!

So, back to the newly acquired Heathkit DX-40 on the bench. It's got a
problem in the oscillator and/or buffer section, but that's half the fun of
buying something at a hamfest. Oh, and my friend says he has an SX-28 for
me - Oh, there is a God!
