I guess I should clarify... I am talking new technology I.E. Digital ... no
tubes... but made specifically to work on older receivers with state of the
art features... weird yes, but why not that is the point. Build something
that is totally custom designed with features specifically for our use older
stuff.

Hi Rob.  Just what do you consider "pricey"?  I've seen plenty of HP 8640's
at around $400 and their military equivalents going for under $300.  I doubt
if you could build one for less with that kind of performance.  Of course,
an old Heathkit with a good counter will do just about as well and would be
considerably cheaper.  I used a set-up like that for years until I upgraded.
