[Hallicrafters] SX-62 Tuning Slack

I had to restring the tuning on an SX-62, and I followed the stringing diagram carefully: it's not a complicated layout. I used
fishing line, which I've used with success in other receivers. However, I am not at all satisfied with the way the tuning operates:
there is "play" in the knob ... so that if you turn the knob slightly past a station, then going back takes more turn than it
should. It makes using the receiver frustrating, to say the least. I don't know whether to blame my restringing, or whether to blame
the bearing of the tuning knob's shaft, which has some backward/forward slack.
Does anyone have any advice on this?
Thanks!
Julian
