Hi,

I did one of these a few years back.  I too had a problem with the Xtal 
filter (and have had on other sets too).  In my case the answer was 
CAREFULLY dis-assembling the Xtal and cleaning the element and contacts etc. 
with a solvent (I used gasoline followed by alcohol).  It was oily inside, 
probably residue from wax OR contact cleaner etc. getting inside.

The sealed metal cans that some radios (like the R-390 and SP-600) use don't 
seem to have this problem, but the ones with a plastic housing "sandwiching" 
the Xtal do.
