[Hallicrafters] SX-71 Restoration update

Hi,

I've seen this on a couple of receivers in years past. One of the first
things that I do when working on a radio is open the tuning capacitor plates
all the way and see if the pointer is at the high end of the scale.

Now, having said that. Just a month or two back I finished overhauling a
National NC-188. Part of the job was restringing BOTH the main and
bandspread tuning dials as somebody had used heavy waxed cord (like you lace
cable with) for one dial cord and the other was a sewing thread 8^(

Anyway, due to tight quarters, this one turned into a real pain in the
backside to restring properly. I used every dental pic and seizer that I
had, but finally got it. I THOUGHT I was following the drawing in the
manual exactly! Imagine my dismay when the main tuning worked properly, but
turning the bandspread knob made that pointer travel in the wrong direction.
YES, it travels correctly in relation to the bandspread capacitor, but the
knob works backwards. Examination showed that I went around the Knob shaft
the wrong way (drawing wasn't all that clear).

HOWEVER, it's NOT going to be corrected anytime soon. That was the last
piece of 'real' dial cord that I had that was long enough and after the
knots were tied they were glued to keep from pulling out, then clipped.
Besides, this way it keeps me on my toes when tuning <grin>.
