[Hallicrafters] POWER SUPPLY FOR HALLI TORNADO

The original power supply for the Tornado is the PS-500A-AC. They are 
difficult, but not impossible to find and appear on eHam and other sites as well as 
hamfests from time to time. Usually the only thing wrong with them is cosmetic. 
Hallicrafters did a terrible job of painting the SR series cabinets. If you 
find one unchipped, it has probably either been repainted or lived in a box all 
it's life. I would recap it right from the start. I have seen them priced 
from $175 up.

It is not difficult to build a supply for the Tornado if you have a big junk 
box or don't mind scouring hamfests. There is nothing there that can't be 
duplicated except for the chassis and cabinet.

I found a Tornado at the Winchester, VA hamfest several years ago for 
$275.00.  The seller said the PS was smoking so he was selling it cheap.  The only 
problem I found was a shorted filter cap and a couple of weak tubes. 

I would say a fair price for the rig without power supply would be $250 up 
depending on condition.
