Great story... only one thing.

The US Navy transmitter, Model TDE was NOT a VHF unit... it was a LF & MF CW
& AM xmtr. that I used many, many times [ 100w CW - 35w AM / 300kc to
18mc ].  You may have been thinking of the TED, as in the 225-400 mHz combo
"TED/RED" (AN/TED-x & AN/URR-13).  I seem to recall that it used a single
4CX250 and was used for tactical stuff and surface-to-air comms.
