Great about the radio row in San Fran. Back in 1958-9 when my dad and I
were building out transmitter and amplifier we visited Radio row in NYC.
Then a trip to nearby Barry Electronics. We spoke with Barry directly and
later to Ted Dames W2KUW. Barry had "everything" and Ted was Mr. Tubes. We
bought some parts from Barry and traded some 100th's in military packing
(remember those tubes suspended inside) for 4-400A's and later 811A's.
Outside of this trip we had the help of two master builders plus catalogs
from Allied, Walter Ashe, WRL, and BA. BA had some bargins in the back
pages. I remember 1625's for 20 cents and a complete Novice transmitter
with coil for 40 for about $5. You build it of course!
Radio row in NYC was torn down to make room for the World Trade Center and
Barry was killed in a boating accident. His wife Kitty ran the business for
a while in the 70's
