In the bigger picture this is what I was eluding to earlier when I
used him as an example. Wasn't my intention to start another thread to
give him more free ads. When someone has a known reputation of
dishonesty, making any deal with them is a roll of the dice. Last year
I purchased a nice receiver from a guy in CT and was amazed that I got
it so cheaply. Basically, only one other person bid. Only later did I
find out that the seller had been nailed for theft and selling stolen
goods, removed from ebay and sent to prison for a while. I bought the
receiver under his new ID (217stuff...), and when I got wind of it and
googled the ID, there was all I needed to know. I was lucky, but I
won't tempt fate again. To me, that would be asking for trouble. While
I'd rate this guy's ads and picture less deceptive than Martyn's, his
past record more than offsets it. I wouldn't have a problem dealing in
person, but sight unseen is out.
Bill is right and I totally agree about sharing the responsibility,
but how much is a seller allowed to lie before they can be considered
responsible? We are all free, of course, to buy from who we want,
whenever we want. If you've had good dealings with someone who others
have warned against, it's sometimes hard to rationalize discontinuing.
As well, we all have different levels of what we're willing to accept
as 'mint, excellent, like new, excellent for its age' and so on. This
adds to the confusion.
My remarks were mainly meant to say that I don't think we are worse
off today when you figure in the whole picture (maybe twice as many
rip offs but perhaps 10 times as many people making 20 times as many
deals). The main difference is, we see and hear of it more easily now,
which makes it less understandable why someone might choose to buy
from a known liar and crook. I'm not talking about a good sellers
whose descriptions are a bit generous, either.
Of course, the prices tend to be lower since fewer people will bid,
which gets back to other aspects mentioned earlier. It can be pretty
tempting to bid on a $800 piece of Collins gear for $350. Whether you
get that piece of gear or a piece of junk is the real issue. You will
pay more from a known source who deals honestly, to be sure, because
more people are willing to take that chance. I'll spend the extra $
and deal with a person who values their reputation more than making a
few more dollars.
