[Hallicrafters] NC-173 and NC-183 National Receiver Comparisons

I never owned an NC-173, but did own an NC-183D. The receiver was
reasonably stable for a "general coverage" receiver. It's performance was
good generally except for one glaring flaw: the use of a "converter"
1st Mixer using the oscillator section of the 6BE6 pentagrid converter
tube. It "pulled" in frequency with stronger signals which is quite
objectionable on SSB or CW service.
I never figured out "why" National did this instead of providing a
seperate HF oscillator stage like a 6C4 or whatever. The circuit is
basically that of the HRO-60 except for this and the dial system of course.

Sandy W5TVW

| How do the Nationals (e.g., NC-173 and NC-183) rate in
| comparison to Hallicrafters and Hammarlunds of the
| same era? What Hallicrafters and Hammarlund models are
| comparable to the NC-173 and NC-183?

| Joe-
|
| I am not familiar with comparisons with the National
| NC-173 and NC-183 with Hallicrafters and Hammarlund
| equivalent models. But perhaps someone here on the
| National thread on mailman.qth.net can help?
|
| I suggest you subscribe to this National thread on
| mailman.qth.net. As stated previously, the posts and
| activity here are low but it is more appropriate to
| get your information here. Besides, this thread on
| National needs yours and anyone else's posts and
| support!
|
| Thanks for asking and Best Wishes!
