and the unanticipated consequences:

Thanks to Electric Radio and Ray Osterwald for the very educational series on the SX-101A, particularly the alignment hints in the last article (ER #199, December 2005).

I never thought my SX-101A needed much alignment and it didn't, but the 50.75 Kc IF was a little off.  Although the performance of the receiver didn't suffer much, but I now know that it meant that when I used the SX-101A to adjust the unwanted sideband suppression in the HT-44, I wasn't getting a true picture.  I could never get the suppression equal for both sidebands. I thought this was the classic HT-44 problem, but it was actually the receiver favoring one sideband due to misalignment. Now, with a more accurately aligned SX-101A, I find that the HT-44 unwanted sideband suppression is in great shape.

Ray said that his alignment hints went for other receivers, such as the SX-117.  I did what he said, and for the first time, I have decent unwanted sideband suppression on the SX-117.
