I started to recap my S-38A by first replacing the line filter. It all
went well and the connections are solid.

I had something similar with an old battery operated tube farm radio that
happened to have short-wave. Short-wave stations were weak and BCB stations
were good at one end of the dial and bad on the other. What I found was poor
oscillator activity from one end of the band to the other. It was easy to see
with a scope.

A new pentagrid converter tube fixed that!
