[Hallicrafters] HT-44 neutralizing capacitor

The "paddle shaped" shaft on the capacitor you have
sounds as if it might be the same sort of thing
Motorola used in tube-type portable and mobile FM
gear. The ends of the tuning shafts for the inductors
were rectangular; they almost looked like they had
been mashed flat. The tools had a recessed sort of
socket that fitted over the end of the shaft. The
tool was nylon and the end that engaged the shaft had
a metal insert. Seems like I recall there may have
been two sizes of these, one for the mobile radios and
a smaller one for the portables.

I'm sure these tools must be long gone from the
Motorola catalog, but someone who has been around
commercial two-way radio servicing for a good many
years may have some.

I think I have also seen similar-looking shaft ends in
the RCA AR-88 receiver. The RCA shafts seem larger
than the Motorola, though.

(Anyone have an alignment tool for an AR-88? I need
one.)

A word to the wise: If you find any of these, guard
them well. Nothing else will work in their place.
And, ANY time you see an unusual tuning tool, grab it.
Some day, you'll find out what it is used for, and
wish you had one.
