The S-models did not have crystal filters, and SX did.
Or that was the original intent.
Actually the last Halli with an actual crystal filter
was the SX-99/SX-110, identical radios behind a
different front panel -- both of which are a
modernized version of the SX-24.
Most of the SX-models from the early fifties on, did
not have crystal filters. The S-76 was originally
dubbed SX-76, but someone must have objected to the
lack of an actual "crystal" filter, so the X was
dropped. The 76 used l/c filtering. The 76, then, may
be the watershed.
Has anyone ever seen an actual receiver marked SX-76,
or was this only in the pre-release ads for the model?
Other than the 99/110, no Halli after 1954 with an
SX-number actually used a crystal filter: the SX-96,
100, 101, 111, 115, 117, 122 etc were all l/c.
It may indeed be that receivers without the X were
perceived as inferior -- witness, the S-85 and S-108
as "stripped down" versions of the SX-99 and SX-110 --
so, the top-line radios began to carry SX numbers
despite the absence of the crystal filter.
