Hello,
What I believe it is about is the general movement in Japan to buy
everything new every few years. It helps to keep their economy going. I
was stationed in Japan for several years and no one is allowed to drive
a car over 3 years old. Regardless of the condition it will not pass
their inspections if more than three years old. If you look in the
yellow pages over here under auto engines, you find used Japanese
engines, these are the ones that come from the cars in Japan that turned
three. These used engines are also sold in countries such as the
Philippines, who manufacture a type of jeep using these Japaneses
engines and drive train to power them. It keeps the car companies in
business.
I believe it is the same for household items such as radios, TV's etc. I
don't think that this law was passed with boat anchors/vintage
electronics in mind. It is a general mindset in the whole country. They
have these large piles of stuff they throw away, everything from
stereo's to furniture. They call them Gomie, young American sailors,
who bring their families over to Japan and have to live on the economy
use these junk piles to furnish their houses. It has become a way of
like to buy new constantly.
Hope this makes sense.
