If you've ever done a search on `tube amplifier kit,' you've noticed
that a huge amount of the results lead you to China.

I guess this post was biased on the sarcastic side. On a business trip to
Tokyo a couple of years ago, I visited a ham shop in Akihabra ("Electric City").
There are nowhere NEAR the amount of radio stores there, that you would
expect. Anyway, in one store, there was quite a commotion around a radio in the
middle of the sales floor. It was the 'Gold Dust Twins". I thought this was
cool, since I have a 75A-4. There was a sign on top of the radio, facing away
from me. As I approached the 'twins', I was expecting the sign to say: "don't
touch!' or similar. Instead, it said: 'you are welcome to touch, but this
unit is not for sale'.
The JAs were looking at the twins in awe and nobody was touching ANYTHING!
Here in the USA, the knobs would have been missing in about 30 seconds.
All the HF gear was on display, fired up, but I was the only ham playing
with the radios. All the JAs were looking with their hands in their pockets.....
I doubt if they will ever part with our treasures!
Such a different mentality, it still amazes me.
I LOVED my time there.
