Another, likely, possibility is a failed cap in the IF transformer.  It's 
quite a job to take one out and replace caps. Do them all while you are at it.

Problems:
1) In some SX-42's the connections are by wire originating inside the 
transformer, and they all must be removed from their chassis connection 
points to get the transformer out.
2) The original caps are mechanically held in place by clamps made integral 
to the metal frame of the transformer. AND.. the cap leads are used as tie 
points for the coil wires and connection leads.  It's a puzzlement as to 
how to put modern caps back in and retain the connection points.

It *may* be possible to do surgery on a transformer in place, but you'll 
need the skills of a practiced dentist to do it.
