Recently we had a former employee of Hallicrafters check into the HCI Net.
He and I later talked at length privately. I asked him about the unusual
number of 'shades of gray' that the company used, even on different runs of
the same model during a current production run. he said that even though
Hallicrafters bought paint from the same suppliers, and in large quanities,
the suppliers seemed to never quite match the same color exactly. The rule
was, as long as it is close, use it. So they did.

Nowadays we are so used to a particular color being matched exactly that we
find it difficult to believe it was not so always. You mix up the right
amount of various chemicals, stir well, and ... Whatever. The result is the
same color of gray. Nope! The assumption here is that all the ingrediants
were the same each time, and they were not. The public was not as concerned
about exact color matches then. After all, most things came in three colors;
white, black or gray! When the white aged, it looked gary. When the black
faded it too look a sort of gray. So we all had a lot of 'gray' days back
then!
