Julian,

Thie *may* have happened because of too-high audio output tube plate current -
in turn caused by leaky grik blocking caps.  Replace those caps for SURE.

Options:
 1) Get it rewound.  Gary Brown does it.

2) Find a suitable replacement from old parts.

3) Buy a new one that has more or less the right plate impedance.  Look up in
tube data sheets for the impedance you need.

The truth is, most any transformer of the right sort will do fine.  (The radio
is push pull 6V6's is it?)  The manual might say. SAMS Photofact will list at
least one replacement unit, maybe more - look up those numbers in catalogs.
