[Hallicrafters] Re: End of the Story (Finally?)

Ancient memories of high school Latin can mislead, as a quick Googling will
establish. The phrase is "pseudo Latin," invented to poke fun at classical
windbags. It apparently appears in a Harvard fight song and was popularized
in WWII by General Vinegar Joe Stllwell, whose version of it was
"Illegitimis non carborundum." Presumably he was aware of the joke. The
ending "-is", according to the Googled site (there are several) is said to
be in the dative case , though my own ancient recollections are that it
should be ablative of means, because "carborundum" is, according to the
Googled site, a gerundive. Whatever. The word "carborundum" did not exist in
Latin (it comes from a Malay word), and "illegitim-whatever" was not used in
ancient Rome to convey the meaning of questionable parentage.
Check it out. Back to boat anchors?
