Well Glen, according to my spirit channeler, the "original" quote WAS in the
singular, referring to a particularly obstructionist Liberal Senator in the 
Roman
government.   I think his name was either Kenneditrix or Schumericus.   So,
I guess even in the ancient Roman days, they were having trouble with
Liberals, just like we have today.
