After many years of hearing my father and his parents
speak about their "Hali SX-25" (their words not mine)
during the World War II years, I finally located it,on
Thursday, buried in the attic of my grandparent's garage.
I have yet to download a manual from BAMA or order
one. Also, I have yet to opened it or wiped off the dust.
This particular SX-25 does not look exactly like others
pictured in Hallicrafters advertisements, Chuck Dachis'
book or pictures from the Internet. Here are the two
differences: on the rear of the chassis between the two
antenna termination points and the external switch
connection point is a female RCA chassis mount
connector. The center insulated part of the RCA
connector appears to be porcelain. I have seen one or
two pictures of other SX25s with the RCA connector.
I assume it's an antenna connection point, too.
The remaining difference is an additional toggle switch
in perfect alignment with the other three toggle switches,
on the radio's front, near the bottom of the SX25. This
particular toggle switch is below, but centered between
the AFC knob and pitch control knob. It appears
identical to all of the other 4 toggle switches. However,
this switch does not have its function painted on the radio's
front. The serial number is H-136881.
My 85 year old uncle does not recall making modifications
to this particular SX25, because he enlisted in the Army in
late 1940 and was in Europe during World War II. My
father was drafted in 1944. Regrettably, I can not ask my
grandparents or my father about modifications or repairs.
All three are deceased.
If anyone has an idea about the above items I would like
to hear them. I may order a reproduction manual and
schematics next week, if time permits. If BAMA has a
manual, I'll download it later today.
